I’ve adored elephants ever since I saw a herd of them cross the savanna, their massive ears flapping like propellers. The sight of these gentle creatures always lifts my spirits. Recently I saw a herd of caparisoned elephants near Amber Fort in Jaipur, waiting patiently for tourists to climb atop them, as the sun glinted off the mirror-work. It was breathtaking. That’s why I decided to make elephants the central motif of my patchwork quilt. There are forty elephant-patches on the quilt. Returning to work on them every morning over the past six months never failed to brighten my day.
