Dimensions: 142 x 92 x 0.5 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: This was a quilt made for a challenge. The title given was "Simplify". While pondering over a design, I googled the meaning for 'simplify', and of the dozen or so synonyms that popped up, the word 'untangle' caught my attention, and the idea was born. I used dark colour at the bottom to show a dark mind in chaos. The lighter brighter colours in the middle show peace and calm when one emerges from the chaos. The dark colour at the top was added to show that life is a cycle!
Convex Illusions
Pramila Noronha
Contemporary Quilts - 2nd Prize Country: United Arab Emirates.
Dimensions: 149 x 149 x 2 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Convex illusion is a very simple pieced design with a very dramatic optical illusion. It is easily created by using shapes and shaded fabric colors. The entire quilt is machine pieced and I quilted it on a domestic machine using holographic and metallic variegated thread. For this pattern, I did simple quilting stitches which enhanced the optical illusion in the center. For the embellishment, I used around 800- 1000 crystals. Making this quilt has taught me how to use various fabric colors to bring out a 3D optical illusion which is a beauty to the eyes.

Gen Nxt - 2nd Prize Country: India
Dimensions: 82.5 x 101.6 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Tokyo 2020
I was all excited to visit Japan in Spring, right in time to see the beautiful Sakura in bloom (Cherry Blossoms), to meet Nitama the cat station master, master some complex origami and even try a Shibori workshop. And in Summer, Japan would host the Olympics and I would get to enjoy 2 weeks of scintillating sports. Well, all those plans just got ‘2020’-ed!
This quilt of Sakura blooms and Olympic rings eclipses the many shades of grey that was this year.
Here’s to 2021 - a year of hope.

Anaya Pardhe
Gen Nxt - Honorable Mention Country: India
Dimensions: 66 x 66 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Gudi Padwa is an Indian festival that marks the beginning of the New Year and the harvest season for the people of Maharashtra. Gudi is the word used to refer to Brahma’s flag (which is hoisted on this day) while Padva is derived from the Sanskrit word Paddava or Paddavo which refers to the first day of the bright phase of the moon. This festival is celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra, according to the Hindu calendar, which usually falls during March-April according to the Gregorian calendar. This day is also symbolic of the season of Vasant or spring in India. Besides Maharashtra, it is also observed under different names in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well, however by a smaller community of people.

Dimensions: 42 x 42 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Carpenter's wheel pattern has fascinated me. I wanted to challenge myself by doing this pattern on a miniature quilt. After watching Donna Jordan of Jordan Fabrics video, I have been longing to try this pattern. So I have minimised the design to make this miniature quilt. Each block is one inch when finished. It's cut, machine pieced and quilted by me. The pieced border adds beauty to the quilt. The quilting has been entirely done by me on a domestic machine. This is my first miniature quilt and also the first time i have quilted a quilt. i am very happy with the quilt.
Anjalé
Chitra Mandanna
Pictorial Art Quilts - 1st Prize Country: India
Dimensions: 97 x 117 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: If you want to know what a pure heart is, you've to meet 'Poopaati Anjalè'. 'Poopaati' means 'Flower Grandma' in TN, India.
Anjalè sells flowers on the pavement in my neighborhood. Once while my 1 1/2 years old daughter & I were on a walk, my little ones eyes fell on the flowers that Anjalè was selling & called out to her as 'Poopaati'. She smiled & gestured us towards her. My little one eagerly took all the flowers she liked.
Once she was satisfied with her pick, I took my purse out to pay. This is when Anjalè surprised me with her generosity & love. She didn't charge me a penny & instead said It is for the child. She can take as many flowers as she wants. It is her generous heart & beautiful smile I have attempted to capture in my quilt.
Mary and Melisha
KUPPULAKSHMI SOMASEKHAR
Pictorial Art Quilts - 2nd Prize Country: INDIA
Dimensions: 62 x 73 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Mary and Melisha
Mary is a true representation of the kind-hearted and hardworking people of Uganda. She hails from a small town called Kasese at the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains. She moved to the capital city, Kampala in search of work and offered to help me around the house. Often while working she would pop in to see me quilting and share her thoughts with a smile. Little does she know, she and her daughter, Melisha are the inspiration for this quilt.
This quilt is made entirely with printed fabrics. For the dresses on Mary and Melisha I have chosen African prints. To be true to the photograph, I quilted the face densely and retained the nature of the African fabric with minimal quilting.
Encircled in Love
Madhu Mathur
Pictorial Art Quilts - Honorable mention Country: India
Dimensions: 92 x 78 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: This quilt, based on a selfie of a joyful mother with her beloved daughter nestling happily in her arms, took me far out of my comfort zone. As someone who paints realistic portraits it was not easy to work with values in printed fabric. I still made some kind of basic rules, like choosing bright colours to depict the pair's joy, symmetry in fabric prints on either side of the faces and cool blues and greens in shadows. I used Susan Carlson's technique of raw-edge collage, gluing the tiny fabric pieces lightly on top of each other to build up the picture. The entire piece is brought together under tulle through quilting. The quilted spirals speak of the daughter's fondness for spinning objects and the larger arcs encircle the duo in love!
An Enchanted Reverie
Sindhu Aragam
Theme Quilts- 1st Prize Country: India
Dimensions: 122 x 91 Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Show me a mustard field in bloom, and I’ll show you a couple having their own DDLJ moment. What is it about a field of flowers that makes Bollywood break into a song and wax rhapsodic about love?
Be it the radiant sarson ke kheth (mustard fields) of North India or the vibrant tulip fields of Europe, Bollywood is there in its saree-clad avatar, with extravagance and glamour, complete with song and dance in the imagery to captivate us in endless rapture!
What remains with us is a technicolor dream-like sequence where we are Sridevi in the flowery hillside of Switzerland, Rekha in the tulip fields of the Netherlands, or Kajol in the mustard fields of Punjab, in an incredible mood and melody with an imaginary Amitabh, Rishi, SRK there with us!
Metal 'n' petal

These rugged metal monsters are adorned with delicate flowers painted all over them making these macho machines seem gentler ...truly a rhapsody!
