This quilt is to celebrate the many unsung women in India. They form the nucleus of our society and live their lives, one day at a time, with strength and fortitude. This lady, a grandmother, she said, had just unloaded her basket of freshly harvested potatoes, carrying them on her back, to walk back to her home over tough mountain terrain. She was delighted and laughed joyfully to see herself in the photograph I took of her, the first time she had seen what she looked like to the world around her. 'Have you never seen your face?' I asked. 'No never', she said, accepting this as a unquestioned reality. I took a series of photographs and composed them together to capture not only this remarkable woman, but the terrain she traverse every day.
