Artist Statement/ Description/ Method
“An Unusual Celebration”, 34”x34”; Technique - Kawandi hand quilting; Material - Four layers of a well-used Bengal cotton saree for back and middle layers of quilt, and saree border for border of quilt; Shirt collars for the graduation cap motif; Tassels made out of remnant fabric, in University specific colors; Purpose – To celebrate 2020 graduations that got cancelled due to covid-19.
Everything usual changed abruptly. Amidst uncertainty, colleges closed, classes went online and so did graduations. This quilt is a celebration of graduations – my daughter from Parsons and son from Clarkson. This is to say – I celebrate you and your achievements and wish you a future where whatever you wish to be, will be.
