“Seeing Patterns - Rooftop/Medallion in Kawandi”; 39”x48”; Technique - Kawandi hand quilting; Material - used sheet and polyester remnants; Purpose – Exploration

In a Kawandi what meets the eye is a lot of patches but with the zoomed-in perspective of creating the quilt, I learned that there are motifs that resemble patterns in African weaves, scattered randomly over an underlying rooftop or medallion-like striped pattern across the quilt. Tiny quilted squares in bright colors adorn the quilt top like they were sprayed on it. To understand the underlying pattern I experimented with a medallion pattern – This quilt is the outcome!

People of various cultures inspire each other. The center motif is my symbol for showing “Unity in diversity”
