How can we imagine a palate without the pungent, citrusy & woody flavour that peppercorns lend to our cuisines? Known as ‘black gold’ in middle-ages, these luxurious aromatic berries enjoyed a special place within the world spice trade, herbal treatments & traditional medicines. This artquilt takes inspiration from the shape & hues of peppercorns. Majority of quilt represents black & white peppercorns; whilst the green, orange & pink coloured varieties with drupes are sprinkled around the edges. The wrinkling appearance of peppercorns is achieved with Kantha hand quilting. Crochet, laces, ribbons & sequins are utilised as imageries for this native wealth of tropical countries. Rejoice tossing these flavourful little feisty berries!
