Artist Statement/ Description/ Method
The main entrance of a South Indian home heralds auspiciousness. Open doors symbolise free movement of propitious goodness. Kuthuvilakku, brass oil lamps, adorn the sides dispelling darkness. Fabric Kolams [painted prayers with rice flour, drawn every morning to feed tiny insects] symbolic of good omens and Marigolds [hexies hand pieced] symbolise sun and positive energies. A festive fabric thoranam [bunting with fresh mango leaves] on top of the door symbolises prosperity. Tiny bells attached to it ring in good fortune and drown out evil. Nalvaravu - welcome to my home - expresses sustainable art sensibilities made with upcycled sarees and dresses, traditional applique and piecing techniques. Design concept by Tina Katwal.
