The Tree of Life is an iconic motif of Indian textile design, symbolic of nature, cycle of seasons and the strong ties to mother earth. Kalamkari fabrics of the 18th century find expression even in the precious Palampores.
During the pandemic, our Quilting Bee came together to learn some techniques for a group submission for the India International Quilt Festival. We created our own resist dye fabric with local flora, sun dried our printed block and did Free Motion Quilting outlining the leaves, flowers... We learnt to create quilted motifs to add to our Tree of Life.
30 quilters, aged 12 - 78, created 30 unique blocks and 60+ motifs for our version of The Tree of Life.
