Yulaume Thangaraj
Shortlisted
Country: India

Dimensions: 222 x 174
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: The main entrance of a South Indian home heralds auspiciousness. Open doors symbolise free movement of propitious goodness. Kuthuvilakku, brass oil lamps, adorn the sides dispelling darkness. Fabric Kolams [painted prayers with rice flour, drawn every morning to feed tiny insects] symbolic of good omens and Marigolds [hexies hand pieced] symbolise sun and positive energies. A festive fabric thoranam [bunting with fresh mango leaves] on top of the door symbolises prosperity. Tiny bells attached to it ring in good fortune and drown out evil. Nalvaravu - welcome to my home - expresses sustainable art sensibilities made with upcycled sarees and dresses, traditional applique and piecing techniques. Design concept by Tina Katwal.
Mini New York Beauty
Mini New York Beauty
Yulaume Thangaraj
Shortlisted
Country: India

Dimensions: 45.5 x 45.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Making a miniature version of the 170 year old vintage design of New York Beauty was a meaningful journey in scaling down the design, keeping in mind the seven spikes on the Crown of the Statue, crafting a suitable template, choosing colours and working with 1700 pieces of fabric. The meditative soulful ride had its challenges and Tina Katwal inspired me to work out options and push the boundaries of exploration in fabric construction. Experiments with extreme colour contrasts with stunning outcomes, the soulful meditative process allowed me to feel the “flow”. Every time the needle goes in and comes out, it holds that moment in suspended animation, a moment never to return, a moment that is precious in the here and now.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall
Srividya Ananthanarayanan

Country: India

Dimensions: 88 x 75
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: This quilt is my ode to the ethereal beauty of Jaipur Blue Pottery, a craft that was brought back from near extinction . A mirror that I had made using the Jaipur Blue Pottery tiles became my inspiration for this quilt. The various designs and motifs used in the craft form the base in creating each of the tile blocks. The outlines of the designs have been done using FMQ and colors have been filled. I have attempted to give the effect of a mirror by using muted silvery fabric. The quilting on it has been done in alternate lines of grey and metallic silver thread to give a feel of light reflection. The individual blocks have been so assembled to give the effect of grouting between the tile blocks finally framing with a brown fabric.
Ode to Madhubani
Ode to Madhubani
Srividya Ananthanarayanan

Country: India

Dimensions: 112 x 94
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: This quilt is my tribute to Madhubani Paintings, a traditional folk-art form from Bihar, an Indian state, that goes back to the days of the great epic, Ramayana. I feel extremely proud and privileged to have learnt Madhubani art from Ms. Vidushini Prasad. The art form employs a two-dimensional imagery and the motifs depicted are strictly limited to deities from the ancient epics, people, nature and/ their interconnected celebratory associations. In this quilt, I have used unbleached cotton fabric to give the effect of the traditional cow dung washed base. The outlines of the designs in my paintings have been first quilted down in the FMQ method and the colors have been filled. Loved and enjoyed this translation of Madhubani art to a quilt.
