Wilna Du Toit

Country: Kuwait

Dimensions: 71 x 54 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: In 2020, we were challenged to design a Sewing Machine Cover. I decided to make a small quilt (big enough to cover my 15 year old domestic sewing machine) with all my favourite quilting essentials in mind - "Quilting Dreams". This quilt is made using mainly the Foundation Paper Piecing technique (FPP patterns designed by Jaynette Huff), fussy cutting, quilted with monofilament thread, and embellished with buttons, pins, a faux blade, a embroidery stitch and crystals (each embellishment accompanied with a unique story/memory).

Country: Kuwait

Dimensions: 147 x 72 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Optic Illusion Quilts are a favourite of mine. With six layers of a beautiful piece of fabric (bought in South Africa before moving to Kuwait), I was able to design this quilt - "Pearls and Twirls" - using the "fabric stacking" technique. Each block turned out to be a total surprise and resulted in a stunning optic illusion.

Wilna Du Toit

Country: Kuwait

Dimensions: 85 x 86 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: During the Pandemic I wanted to challenge my free motion quilting abilities and my 15 year old domestic sewing machine. With the modern minimalism quilt design (by Judi Madsen) and quilting pattern design (by Judi Madsen), there was lots of space for ruler work and free motion quilting fillers. My goal was precision, whilst having a lot of piecing fun (only using scraps available in my quilting room), marking fun and quilting fun. The center is embellished with crystals - just a dash of bling to celebrate the completion of this quilt.

Carmina Fernandes

Country: INDIA

Dimensions: 81 x 61 x 1
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Quilts are traditionally made with Fabrics that were leftover and pieced together making a deliberate pattern and sometimes none at all. During the Work from Home, I've been working on this piece entirely by hand as I do not have access to a sewing machine. The piece is hand-sewn completely by using a muted colour for the quilting. All fabrics and threads have been used from whatever is available at home itself. In quilts always square patches are used, instead here I have used long stripes to give it a new design exploration and different look.

I have been working on this for more than two years on and off.

SAVING MOTHER EARTH!
Ranju Gandhi

Country: India

Dimensions: 144 x 144
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: The year 2020 has been challenging in more ways than one could have ever fathomed. A global pandemic halted life as we know it. While 2020 curtailed traveling and meeting our loved ones, humans were forced to slow down. With that slowing down, Mother Earth has started to heal. My Quilt (circular, 144 cm diameter) shows a healing Mother Earth, the yellow sun shining brightly, the blues are the rivers flowing beautifully and meandering through the mountains, while the greens represent the floral life of the forest coming back to life and bringing with them vibrancy!

Priyanka Gopalaswamy

Country: India

Dimensions: 79 x 97
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Isolation and lockdown brought with it dreams of travels to distant lands, exotic beasts and open seas.I have forever been fascinated by marine creatures like the dugongs, narwhals, and giant squids, the inspiration of many myths and fairytales.Pictured here is one such majestic creature from my fantasy of an Arctic Sunset. Two narwhals touch tusks against the setting sun, their movements causing the waters to splash and froth around them. The shallow frigid waters reflect the sun and the aquascape is complete with a snowbank. The narwhals are patterned and pieced using FPP in this otherwise figure-it-as-you-go quilt.I have experimented with curved piecing, jelly rolls and the balancing of warm and cool tones. This is my first strip and FPP quilt.

Nandini Harikrishnan

Country: India

Dimensions: 125 x 110 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: The color of the sky just at sunset is a mixture of reds, oranges and browns. The twilight colors are very dramatic and eye catching and this is an image I cherish. These bright and vibrant colors and images of the sunset danced in my head for a long time and so I decided to incorporate these beautiful colors in my Bargello Quilt which follows the pattern of twisting and turning. I would like to thank Eileen Wright for her pattern "Island Sunset" and Tina Katwal for beautifully quilting and enhancing the beauty making the sunset so vivid.
