Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: I went to Namibia last fall, and took a photo of this pair of zebras and surrounding grayish white bushes and grasses. Vennila
Ilakkiya Maran

Country: India

Dimensions: 146.05 x 67.31 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Vennila! If you're thinking it's an icecream flavour, then ooops. It's my Amma's name which means White Moon in Tamil. Since I'm away from home for the first time for my craft studies I thought of making a warm quilt which reminds me of my mom's warmth to save me from Jaipur's winter chills. So I made this quilt using blue which represents the dark & cold nights and applique with a crescent moon which represents my mom and celestial bodies with sashiko embroidery. I've also hand dyed strips of fabric using tie dye techniques such as shibori, bandhani & with some intuitive ideas to create values & patterns with found objects and blue dye. Finally added tassels from trims for a bohemian look. Best for studying and picnic dates.

The works involved on this piece were machine embroidered Appliqué in the hoop and quilting. The pattern is embedded in the size of approx 36” by 36” and to be viewed from a distance off 10 to 15 ft to give the desired visual effect of a slow clockwise.
