Strawberry Petal Punch
Strawberry Petal Punch
Saira Sumar

Country: India

Dimensions: 110 x 110 x 1
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: Bombay like most of India, has her hot season, where we get to enjoy beautiful fruits like mangos, but unfortunately as children, we weren’t able to enjoy strawberries in winter. In those months, we would enjoy the cooler climate with picnics outdoors surrounded by flowers. And as any Indian picnic goes, out came the bottle of limbu pani, tea and food. Those picnics hold many memories of being together and happy. Strawberry Petal Punch is my expression of those times. The curved piecing recreates the flowers and the bold, bright colors represent my emotions surrounding those memories. This Modern style, along with the facing creates a more contemporary quilt, and the straight line quilting using the walking foot is a representation of my journey

Varsha Sundararajan

Country: India

Dimensions: 142 x 97 x 1
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: 14,220 minutes, 75600 stitches, each stitch a meditative repetition of a mantra. Made of 108 individual quilts of 4 inches square held together by pins, the quilt allows the air to flow through, much like Tibetan prayer flags that carry prayers along with the wind. The spirals emanating from the centre of each quilt signify my human journey from inside out embracing the world in the first four decades followed by an outside-in movement as I now move inward collecting myself. The quilt's shape can be altered - elongated today, a square tomorrow, a tall obelisk the day after. Kinetic, ever moving and an exploration in mindfulness, the piece is still growing in meditative moments, one stitch at a time…108 and counting

Childhood in Japan and India
Viraj Thakore

Country: Singapore

Dimensions: 102 x 77 x 1
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: This quilt is a marriage of Japanese and Indian fabrics. Life of a child is represented in this quilt. Hand embroidered Shashiko panels are made of motifs of childhood. Contemporary Japanese indigo fabrics frame these motifs to represent the path to adult hood. Vintage Japanese Ikat fabrics finish the edges, representing the silvers years. Indian hand dyed batik fabrics traverse from light to a dark burgundy tone. Lighter tones represent childhood, while the dark burgundy tone represents the richer tones of the silver years. Traditional floral quilting has been employed to represent the garden of life with many winding paths in life that bloom. Piecing and quilting done by Viraj Thakore.

This quilt has been pieced together using recycled material by students of V-Excel Educational Trust, an Indian non-profit that works towards enriching and empowering lives of persons with special needs. Handcraft helps build the body and soul capacities of every individual, including those with Autism, as they stitch with their hands and heart engrossed in the activity. They feel anchored despite their inner and outer turbulence. In our student’s words - “This piece came together during the rains and cyclone, threading different currents, stitches, waves into a tapestry of calmed chaos. It also reminded us that the sun will still shine and a boat can ride any storm if you keep trying.”

The shy giraffe is breaking barriers, exploring, and waiting to be ‘seen’ for who he is! In our student’s words - “This piece emerged out of one simple, sweet, shy giraffe asking to be seen. Supporting this one central theme, this piece reminded us that communities are sometimes formed simply to serve one person’s destiny and that is itself is an honour- for you never know- you might be providing food or shelter or covering up an inadequacy of the community just by your presence.”

Dimensions: 99 x 122 x 1
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: “Seeing Patterns - Rooftop/Medallion in Kawandi”; 39”x48”; Technique - Kawandi hand quilting; Material - used sheet and polyester remnants; Purpose – Exploration In a Kawandi what meets the eye is a lot of patches but with the zoomed-in perspective of creating the quilt, I learned that there are motifs that resemble patterns in African weaves, scattered randomly over an underlying rooftop or medallion-like striped pattern across the quilt. Tiny quilted squares in bright colors adorn the quilt top like they were sprayed on it. To understand the underlying pattern I experimented with a medallion pattern – This quilt is the outcome! . People of various cultures inspire each other. The center motif is my symbol for showing “Unity in diversity”

Country: United States

Dimensions: 117 x 137 x 0.5
Artist Statement/ Description/ Method: “Christmas”; 46”x54”; Technique-Kawandi inspired hand quilting; Material - loosely woven used sheet, remnant Christmas fabrics, a red and gold ribbon; Purpose – Decorative I am used to decorating my home for Christmas well ahead of Christmas Day. Boxes come out of the special loft and I add something new to the collection every year. My nativity has some ‘Golu’ elements. Dolls come to adore baby Jesus. One Christmas I was far from home, far from my cherished decorations; and not that much floor space. That’s when this wall Christmas tree was born to bring in the cheer. It signifies a new beginning for my family and me.
